Renowned for his poetry, plays, essays, and conversational skills, Oscar Wilde also wrote scintillating works of short fiction. This volume includes four fine examples, including The Canterville Ghost, the comical tale of a spirit who terrorized the residents of Canterville Chase for three centuries. When the manor is acquired by a no-nonsense American family with no use for the supernatural, hilarity ensues.
Three other stories feature "The Sphinx Without a Secret," a tale of an enigmatic woman who carries a mystery's key to her grave; "The Model Millionaire," recounting the exploits of a "delightful, ineffectual young man with a perfect profile and no profession"; and "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime," in which an aristocrat learns that he is destined to commit murder. Rounding out the volume are Wilde's lyrical Poems in Prose: "The Artist," "The Doer of Good," "The Disciple," "The Master," "The House of Judgment," and "The Teacher of Wisdom."

Crit Out Of Books The Canterville Ghost and Other Stories
This story is so very funny!!! A true work of its witty and extremely intelligent creator, one of the greatest men to have ever lived on the earth. It is Gothic, indeed, but it is a parody of Gothic. You will have a very good time, if you read it. The rest of the stories which are included in the same book are also interesting and entertaining.

3.5 AverageA charming collection of stories from Oscar Wilde. Although I adore Oscar's writing, it took me a long time to finish. I'm not a huge fan of reading collections, but I appreciate it for what it is.Individual Rating:1. The Happy Prince - 42. The Nightingale and The Rose - 3.753. The Selfish Giant - 3.54. Lovely!!! Like always!!!

LOVE The Canterville Ghost and Arthur Saviles Crime. The others were so-so.

Alluring, captivating, unsettling

A mixed bag here I think. Oscar Wilde has written some amazing stuff, but I tend to find his fairy tales have the tinge of saccharine, even if everyone tends to end up dead or miserable in them (especially the birds). The main story here, however, "The Canterville Ghost" is really closer to a novella and manages to stave off overt sentimentality for much of the story. It is, though, a piece of curious halves. The first is an almost farcical ghost story in which a new family is most certainly not

This is such a collection of 6 short stories by Oscar Wilde. I read it for the Ireland challenge. I really love the writings of Oscar Wilde. They are engaging and clever. The two longer stories in this edition, The Canterville Ghost and Lord Arthur Savilles Crime-are very funny and full of sarcasm at British antiquarianism. Such a fun book to read.
