White Australian history told from a female perspective- I read this whole series with my young teenage daughter and we both loved it and learnt so much! Includes brilliant aboriginal characters from the early days, characters from our famous poems such as Clancy of the overflow but also fleshs out invisible characters in our history such as Nancy of the Overflow and is rich in female characters all the way down through several generations covered in this saga. A must read for teenage girls

Waltz for Matilda, written by Jackie French, is a beautifully written, captivating novel about Matilda, a young Australian girl who runs away from the city to join her father in the outback. Life is hard out there and happy endings are sparse, however, Matilda works hard, is strong and thoughtful and courageous! Jackie French recommended I read this book of hers first, and it is truly wonderful. I have recommended it for younger readers as well as older readers because its story is accessible

I am excited to read and experience the rest of this series because of how immersed I got within the pages of A Waltz for Matilda. We follow the struggles, losses, hopes and endurance of Matilda as she is suddenly forced to come of age, parallel with the development of Australia as a new nation. This was a sweet book. The raw ideas presented in this book are a bit over whelming, a parent's death, a twelve yr old making her way many, many miles alone, slums, flood, war, bushfires, some lawlessness , women as second class citizens and more. The perseverance of the main characters is well developed. The love shown by people to people. Some history of a country I am a bit enamored by made this a very enjoyable read. This would be an appropriate book for anyone from about age 12 up,
