Narrative In Pursuance Of Books Hersenschimmen

[...] Ze houdt me in de gaten.' Meer nog dan een verhaal over dementie is Hersenschimmen een liefdesgeschiedenis, met een overmijdelijk tragisch einde.

This is a sad story... But this story will be amazing for those who can live it, not just read it. Amazing, but sad. We can never live more then one life, but we can always try to understand what others live. I think this book is trying to open our eyes to the fact that we live in the past, we are nothing without our past and we are afraid to look ahead. But what happens when you don't remember anything about your past?

During the past few days Ive read Bernlefs Hersenschimmen, which describes the process of dementia from the early stages onwards. One of the most interesting things in the novel is the point of view the author uses, as the narrator himself is the dementia patient. The novel is very well written and tries to provide an insight into the mental changes of a dementia patient and the problems this causes for both the patient and the partner. Definitely worth reading!Hersenschimmen has been translated

I don't know what to think about this book. It's good and I liked the way the author told the story but it did not grab my attention as much as I expected it to do. I've only read a few books in Dutch literature but I think this is the best one yet. I would recommend it because it's an easy read and the story is beautiful

The first part of the book was great. It was an opportunity to read about dementia, on how it presumably affects both the person suffering from memory loss and the people around him/her. Especially the frustration with the situation became very clear, and was agonizing. After that it feels like it's going too fast. With very staccato sentences that were hard to understand, I disliked the final part of the book. I do admire the way the writing is in line with the condition of the protagonist.

Amazing! Just amazing!I used to have a relatively poor understanding of the mind of people with Alzheimer's, even though I thoroughly studied the dementia in theory but this book completed my knowledge on the subject.I used to be afraid of Alzheimer's disease, especially at the thought of all memories disappearing. But now I see that even though he realized something wasn't right and that his memories were fading away, Maarten didn't miss them that much. Memories of his past life just weren't

It is not often that I finish a book in one go. Hersenschimmen is a story about a man called Maarten who lived in the Netherlands, in a city called Alkmaar. So far this book could've been about me! The main character moved to Boston at some point in his life and when the story begins we find Maarten retired in his home at the age of 73.This is not a happy story. In fact, it is a rather sad one. Maarten is suffering from the early stages of dementia. It starts innocent enough with him forgetting

A story about a Dutch man, living in the US, suffering dementia. The dementia in this book is progressing very fast. From forgetfulness till hospitalization in only a few weeks time. I am not sure if that's possible. In any case, we see the world as the man sees is. He is getting more and more confused about what is happening. He doesn't know day from night or what day of the week it is. Every page his state deteriorates further. To me it seems very realistic, even though no one knows what
